Stancomb, Donald and Heather
On October 10th, the day after the Milton hurricane, the Stancomb Family returned to their
home in West Bradenton, FL to discover the house and yard were flooded with raw sewage.
Their home is located directly across the street from Lift Station Pump 17 in the City of
Bradenton, FL. Unknown to them, the city took that lift station oIline 2 days before the
storm, putting it on an inferior, temporary pump station that failed during the storm.
The City has known about this failing Pump Station for many years and has failed to make
the necessary upgrades and repairs to bring it up to modern-day standards to prevent the
homes and businesses in the area from repeatedly being flooded by the backflow/overflow
of raw sewage from this failing infrastructure.
October 10th was not the first time the Stancomb’s house was flooded out with raw sewage.
They have gone through this in the past and the city gutted their home and the Stancomb’s
were responsible for the financial burden of rebuilding the interior of their home. Not only
was their home and yard flooded the street their home is located at was overflowing and
flooded with the same raw sewage – essentially causing a hazardous waste dump in the
immediate vicinity of their home.
Since their home was first flooded, their family has experienced many health ailments,
particularly their son, who now suffers from IBS and terrible stomach issues.
Through this ordeal, the Stancomb Family has had to fight an uphill battle for housing,
paying for short-term housing out of pocket while waiting for grants and FEMA assistance to
be approved, requiring them to run up credit card debt and spend any savings they had to
simply survive. They lost their home, their clothes, their furniture, all household items, and
their health through this ordeal. They have been met with resistance over and over at every
turn with the City. The City administration has now resorted to threats of taking the house
by eminent domain or condemnation if the Stancomb’s don’t agree to a settlement just to
move this along.
As a family with two minor children, the Stancomb’s just want to return to a normal life
where they know what tomorrow looks like for them in a safe and healthy home, reunited
with their pets.
It is their prayer and hope to have a resolution to this nightmare as soon as possible so they
can begin to rebuild, replace, and resettle their lives as a family.
